VERSES PROVIDES MORE THAN JUST FOOD FOR THOUGHT

The Verses session on Wednesday the 29th of August, celebrates its 3rd year of success, provides an inspiring close to Women’s Month and aims to collect a record amount of Peanut Butter for the Amy Bhiel Foundation.

What started on the 2nd of August 2004 as a modest 20 people event, has grown into the most popular spoken word, live music, open mic and soul hop session in Cape Town. Verses, happening at Zula Bar, Long Street on the last Wednesday of every month, has seen the likes of Burni (Godessa), Blaq Rose (Mbali), Teba and Jitsvinger & Demus as featured artists. Live bands and musicians have included the SAMA award winning Claire Phillips, Napalma from Brazil, Tykoon Suit and South Paw. The open mic session remains the most popular slot where spoken word artists, beatbox masters and singer/songwriters flaunt their wares. The Fong Kong Verses Crew holds it all together with their unique blend of soul hop on the decks.

This month, we pay tribute to Women’s Month with 2 extraordinary women in the featured slots. Za opens up with her signature blend of jazzy contemporary spoken word and firm favourite Blaq Pearl follows with her upbeat socially conscious lyrics – and this time she’s bringing her band along! Make sure you come early to sign up for the open mic session. The evening will kick off at 9pm.

Verses is also introducing its new social responsibility programme, “Food for Thought.’ Patrons are encouraged, this month, to bring along a jar of peanut butter for the Amy Bhiel Foundation. The Amy Biehl Foundation programmes are designed to develop and empower youth in our poverty-stricken townships, contribute to community building efforts and give children hope and a brighter future. This is achieved by providing educational and cultural activities that offer students healthy alternatives to all the negative influences in society today including crime, violence, drugs and sex, unlocks their creative talent and creates future leaders & entrepreneurs for SA. Their programmes reach over 3,000 children every week. But before the kids can start learning or participating in any kind of activity, they need to eat….

The cover charge is R20, but…bring along a jar of peanut butter to Verses on Wednesday the 29th of August and pay only R10 entry fee!!
